Craft Club: Mermaid Crowns!!

Hooray, it’s Wondercrew Wednesday! (Ok it’s Thursday today, but just pretend with me?) I love being able to share something special with my beloved Wondercrew, the kind folks who support me so I can share so many wonderful things with others. This week’s surprise is a Craft Club project that I’ve had a lot of fun designing, I hope you like it too!

Are you ready for beach season? And by that, of course, I mean do you have your handmade customized mermaid crown ready to go? This is such a fun project to make, and even more fun to make with friends! Have a “shell potluck” where everyone brings a couple kinds of shells to contribute and make a bunch of lovely crowns together!

I firmly believe that every body is a “beach body,” and that you are perfect exactly as you are now. I also believe that life is just too dang short to hold back on personal expression for fear of being seen as “weird.” In my experience, when you just OWN that weirdness, people love you for it! In fact, it often feels like the more “me” I am and the weirder I get, the more the right kind of people tend to show up in my life. Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t be a beautiful merperson at any age, shape, weight, color, gender expression, or anything else! Fantasy is for everyone.

These crowns are relatively simple to make after a little beach combing. You’ll need to know (or learn) how to attach beads to chain (don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds!) and it is helpful to have some kind of mannequin head to work on - I have a cheap styrofoam one from the craft store that I glued onto a wooden base and then covered in a stiff layer of paper mache. Ready to plunder your seashell horde and make a magical new accessory? Let’s dive right in!
