Secret Recipe: Soothing Dandelion Bath Bombs for 'Eggshell Days'

Have you ever held a freshly laid egg in your hands? I find it strangely comforting and absolutely magical in a very down-to-earth way. Perhaps the egg is still warm with a bit of straw or feather stuck to its side. You hold it gently, knowing that just a little pressure could crack it open. Here is this smooth, precious stone that contains the embryo of an equally-precious little chick, an animate mineral, an ancient miracle. Maybe you watch the mother hen nibble on dandelions in the background with admiration for producing something so perfect.

I picture eggs when I am feeling fragile. Those days are often during painful flare ups of my chronic illness when I am filled with fear or pain-based stress. I picture eggs on the days when I feel like I could split right open with any more pressure, worried that I will crumble at the foot of the mountain I must climb. Perhaps you can relate to that feeling too as you are swallowed in grief, or pain, or fear. It’s okay to feel a little breakable sometimes.

On those days my memory is drawn back to some game I played as a kid, a race in which we held raw eggs in our palms. The challenge was to be gentle with your hands but energetic with your body, weaving through an obstacle course while protecting that fragile little egg. I don’t remember the details or who won, but I remember being filled with a sense of reverence and responsibility to keep that perfect little orb safe.

Life feels a bit like that game, sometimes. The way to climb out of some pit or survive another day is to hold yourself gently and softly. There are days you can do that while you climb, and there are days when all you can do is cushion yourself and know that it will pass. When you are feeling fragile, know that you have immense strength and ability to grow within, but treat yourself as gently as you would handle a delicate raw egg.

That’s the inspiration behind these elegant bath bombs. Oats, goat milk, and sweet almond oil soften tight skin. Baking soda and dandelion petals relax the muscles. The herbal fragrances of bergamot, jasmine, and marjoram  soothe the body to envelop you in a bath that feels soft, nourishing, and gentle. Let it hold you. As the bath bomb fizzes and disperses, picture your source of stress melting away too. Cry if you need to. Laugh if it helps. Take all the time you need.

I stuck with natural inspiration for the design of these egg bath bombs. When I look at a carton full of eggs from heritage breeds of chickens that my friend lovingly raises, I wonder why we even need to dye eggs at all! The color palette of her sweet feathered friends is stunning: deep mahogany brown, light tan, sky blue, white, light teal, and more. All beautiful and all natural.
