Imagine you are viewing the world as a large maple tree perched on a hill overlooking fields. Time has a different flow for you now; nights and days are your slow respiration as you breathe in and out with your mighty lungs. You’ve seen civilizations come and go, fields planted and harvested and re-planted once again. Right now, they are filled with sunflowers.
In your long long life, you’ve never witnessed the wonder of sunflowers before. Each morning you feel the warmth of anticipation even before you feel the rays of the sun nourishing you. You watch the big yellow faces below stand at attention for sunrise, then lovingly follow the sun across the sky with their gaze. Each day in their eager adolescence, the ever-optimistic sunflowers beam up at the sun. What a beautiful reminder to look towards the light. Can you feel it fill you too?
As the sunflowers reach maturity, they are content to just rest and soak in the rays. Most sunflowers will end their heliotropism by stopping to stare into the east, knowing the warmth of the sun on their blossoms in the morning will attract more pollinators. You see the field age and come to rest gently facing the sunrise (aside from a few rebels that stare off into other directions.) What beautiful sights they must witness.
When I read “I really just want to be the warm yellow light that pours all over everyone I love” scrawled inside a bathroom stall, I smiled to myself and thought that a sunflower must have written it.
Savory Sunflower Cupcakes:
These beautiful treats are a trick for the eyes. What first appear as beautifully-frosted cupcakes are actually savory muffins full of late summer veggies, cheese, and hearty sunflower seeds. “Frosting” made out of mashed potatoes finishes the lovely illusion with a pillowy bite. These are a great breakfast or snack!
